March 29 at 8 p.m. Science College Public Lecture

CYBERNETICS SKETCHES OF ANOTHER FUTURE"
By ANDREW PICKERING

In this lecture the questions that will be addressed are: what do robotic tortoises, homestats, the anti-psychiatry movement, complexity theory, building that reconfigure themselves in use, the 60s counterculture and tantric yoga have in common? These examples are drawn from the history of post-World War Two. Cybernetics is defined as the study of control and communication in animals and machines. The lecture will explain that each acts as a vision of the world radically different from that of modern science and western commonsense. The politics of cybernetics, which explains that its aim is an experimental openness to what the world has to offer rather than a grim quest for domination and control.
